HOW WE WORK

Our Approach

Evidence-based, transparent, and independent. Here's how CPS evaluates research, approaches accountability, and maintains the integrity of our work.

Evidence Grading Framework

Every claim CPS makes is evaluated against our four-tier evidence framework.

1Strong

Highest level of confidence. Findings are consistent across multiple high-quality studies.

Criteria

Multiple randomized controlled trials, systematic reviews, or meta-analyses with consistent findings

Permitted Language

The evidence establishes...

2Moderate

Good confidence. Findings are supported by multiple studies but may have some limitations.

Criteria

Well-designed studies with replicated findings, or a single high-quality systematic review

Permitted Language

The evidence suggests...

3Limited

Emerging evidence. Findings are promising but require further replication.

Criteria

Pilot studies, expert consensus, single well-designed studies, or preliminary findings

Permitted Language

Preliminary evidence indicates...

4Insufficient

Not enough evidence to draw conclusions. Further research is needed.

Criteria

Theoretical basis only, contradictory findings, absence of relevant research, or poorly designed studies

Permitted Language

Evidence is insufficient to...

Just Culture Framework

We apply Just Culture principles from healthcare safety science to psychotherapy.

Systems Thinking

Most safety failures stem from systemic factors—not individual malice. We focus on identifying and improving the systems that shape clinical practice.

Fair Accountability

We distinguish between honest errors that deserve system support, at-risk behaviors that need coaching, and reckless conduct that requires accountability.

Learning Culture

Errors and adverse outcomes are opportunities to learn and improve. We promote transparent reporting and analysis rather than blame and concealment.

Editorial Independence

Our Independence Commitment

CPS maintains editorial independence from all funders, partners, and professional associations. This means:

  • No funder or partner has approval rights over CPS content
  • All funding sources are publicly disclosed
  • The Scientific Advisory Council operates independently
  • We do not accept funding with editorial conditions

How We Differ

CPS takes a distinct approach compared to other organizations in this space.

CPS Approach

  • Evidence-graded claims with transparent methodology
  • Modality-neutral safety focus
  • Just Culture: systems-first accountability
  • Independent from all professional associations
  • Consumer-accessible language

Common Alternatives

  • Ungraded assertions or opinion-based claims
  • Modality-specific advocacy or opposition
  • Blame-focused or punitive approaches
  • Funded by or affiliated with professional groups
  • Academic or jargon-heavy communication

Common Questions

We use a four-tier system (Strong, Moderate, Limited, Insufficient) based on the quality, quantity, and consistency of available research. Each tier has specific criteria and permitted language. For full details, visit our Evidence Standards page.

Just Culture is a framework from healthcare safety science that distinguishes between systemic problems (which require system fixes), at-risk behaviors (which require coaching), and reckless conduct (which requires accountability). This approach encourages reporting and learning rather than blame and concealment.

CPS maintains editorial independence through strict policies: no funder or partner has approval rights over our content, we disclose all funding sources, and our Scientific Advisory Council operates independently. We do not accept funding with editorial conditions attached.
